TERRE HAUTE — Weather permitting, the Indiana State baseball team will open up the new Bob Warn Field on Saturday against Tennessee-Martin with a doubleheader. ISU’s series was originally tabbed for one game each on Friday, Saturday and Sunday.
“That’s exciting. It’s actually later than we hoped of course,” ISU Director of Athletics Ron Prettyman said Wednesday.
ISU’s home opener was originally slated for Tuesday against Indiana University, but constant cold temperatures held back the construction crew’s ability to finalize the new FieldTurf surface on the infield.
“We’ve got the crew in there night and day,” Prettyman said. “The turf was down, but because of the process of sewing it all together, they needed the appropriate weather. It hasn’t been glued down. The various layers haven’t been sowed down.”
A special celebration for the new facility will not be held until later in the season, Prettyman said.
“We’re actually going to do a grand celebration during one of the last sessions of the year where we’ll have alumni in,” Prettyman said. “Again, because of the weather, we were unable to finish the parking lot, unable to finish the cement work.
“While it’s going to be an exciting thing to open the facility, it’s still a work in progress.”
Start times on Saturday and Sunday is at 1 p.m., with all three games going nine innings.
