TERRE HAUTE —
Thanks to several Wabash Valley businesses, “Bill Nye The Science Guy” will headline the Terre Haute Children’s Museum Grand Opening Weekend. Nye will make a free public appearance at 11 a.m. Sept. 25, outdoor on the lot between Eighth and Ninth streets off Ohio Street.
“We couldn’t think of a better tie in to a new science and technology museum than Bill Nye,” said Lynn Hughes, executive director of the museum. “Generations have seen him unveil the marvels of science on television, so we’re excited to partner with these area businesses to give our community an opportunity to see him in person during the grand opening of the new museum.”
Nye will present an exciting science demonstration and be available for interaction with the audience. Nye’s appearance will be part of many outdoor activities that weekend, and admission to his show will be free.
Nye’s appearance was made possible by five sponsors – Cobblestone Crossings, Roshel Family Dentistry, Minton’s ATA Black Belt Academy, Toyota of Terre Haute and Indiana State University.
As a scientist, engineer, comedian, author, and inventor, Bill Nye strives to make science as entertaining and accessible as possible. His first job after college was working as an engineer at the Boeing Company. However, an early love of entertaining led him to moonlight as a stand-up comedian. Eventually, the night job became his day job when he joined Seattle’s comedy show “Almost Live” as a writer and performer. That’s where ‘Bill Nye the Science Guy’ was born.
The program Bill Nye the Science Guy has won 18 Emmy Awards.
The grand opening celebration for the new Terre Haute Children’s Museum will take place Sept. 24 to 26. The museum will be open from 1 to 8 p.m. Sept. 24, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Sept. 25, and noon to 6 p.m. Sept. 26.
The museum also encourages people to take advantage of the many other family-friendly events taking place in the downtown area that weekend. The Terre Haute Street Fair will be staged at the Clabber Girl Festival Marketplace at Ninth and Cherry streets Sept. 23-25, and the Union Hospital Children’s Classic Run will take place on Sept. 25. The Vigo County Public Library will also host its annual Family Learning Day on Sept. 25.
