TERRE HAUTE —
With a goal of raising $65,000 in 60 days, the American Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter has kicked off its 17th annual Save the Day Campaign.
A $5,000 donation from Jadcore Inc. led off the fundraising effort, recognized with a proclamation from Terre Haute Mayor Duke Bennett.
“Save the Day, along with gifts from the United Way of the Wabash Valley, make it possible for us to train our disaster relief volunteers and to give them the equipment they need to respond around the clock,” said Red Cross chapter executive director Carol Stevens.
Funds from the campaign will be used to deliver disaster relief to families who lose their homes to such events as fires, floods, tornadoes and earthquakes. The funds also will be used to empower youth with the skills and information needed before a disaster, accident or sudden illness strikes, to deliver emergency messages to service members and their families deployed around the world, to prepare National Guard and Reservist families for the deployment of a loved one; and to teach youth and adults about humanitarianism and the work of the Red Cross around the world.
The campaign includes Clay, Greene, Parke, Putnam, Sullivan, Vermillion and Vigo counties in Indiana and Edgar County in Illinois.
Stevens said the Wabash Valley chapter most often provides assistance to people who have lost their homes through fire. The family is helped with a temporary place to live and given hygiene products, food, clothing and connection to a mental health support person, if needed.
Ted Kraly of Terre Haute Savings Bank returns as this year’s campaign chairman. He commended the Wabash Valley as a giving and caring community willing to help others in need and supportive of the Red Cross.
“Everyone knows what it the Red Cross is and does, but they don’t want to be a recipient of help, because it usually means a disaster,” Kraly said. “It is heartwarming to see the generosity of this community.”
He recalled that in 2012, the Red Cross worked with other emergency services providers to shelter people displaced by an arson fire at the Garfield Towers apartments.
Bennett has declared March as Red Cross Month in Terre Haute and encouraged citizens to support the Red Cross Wabash Valley Chapter with a gift.
In a news release, Jadcore Inc. President David Doti stated,” For the seventeenth year I am proud to make a donation on behalf of all Jadcore employees to the Wabash Valley Chapter of the American Red Cross. Our local chapter not only provides comfort and relief to Valley families in times of need, but also works with companies, like Jadcore, to train our employees to be prepared when emergencies happen. I can only hope that other local businesses and individuals follow our lead to make this year’s ‘Save the Day’ campaign a great success.”
Last fiscal year the Wabash Valley Chapter:
~ responded to 157 disasters, mostly home fires.
~ provided emergency assistance such as food, clothing, lodging, critical medications, mental health support and referrals to 187 families in the aftermath of a home fire or other disaster.
~ provided emergency services to 678 area military families.
~ delivered three international messages.
~ taught 11,377 people of all ages in lifesaving skills such as disaster preparedness, CPR, First Aid, life guarding, scrubby bear, basic aid training and international humanitarianism.
