Tribune-Star staff brings home awards over weekend

INDIANAPOLIS — Tribune-Star photographer Joe Garza and columnist Mark Bennett took a total of six awards in this year’s Better Newspaper Contest sponsored by the Hoosier State Press Association Foundation.

The newspaper’s Alicia Morgan also captured a first-place award.

Garza received first place in the annual contest for his photo series depicting Sonner Faught, a Sullivan man who places American flags on the graves of veterans each year on Memorial Day. He also received a pair of third-place awards for best sports feature photo and best general news photo.

Bennett received a second-place award for best in-depth feature story or series for his series, “Walking in the Shadows of 9/11.” Bennett and photographer Rachel Keyes also received second place for best photo/audio/video story, also for “Walking in the Shadows of 9/11.” Bennett also won a third-place award for “best general commentary.”

Morgan, with Garza, was the newspaper’s only other first-place winner this year. She took a first for her page design and layout in the category best business section.

Tribune-Star editor Max Jones received a third-place award for best editorial page.

The Tribune-Star staff received several second-place awards this year, including for best special section, best ongoing news coverage, best sports section and best online site/web page. The staff also received a third-place award in the category best newspaper design. In all, the newspaper received 13 awards.
