Work was under way throughout the weekend as downtown merchants prepare to pull off another Miracle on 7th Street.
Boo Lloyd, owner of Corner Grind and Crossroads Cafe, said the fourth annual Miracle on 7th Street will bring more than 30 stores and businesses between Fourth and Ninth streets into the holiday spirit Friday night. From Walnut to Ohio street and over to Wabash Avenue, lights, trees and all the trimmings will be in action from 5 p.m. well into the evening.
“Last year we had 10,000 people. This year, we expect 10,000 people plus some more,” she said.
This year’s Gingerbread House Display and contest will be hosted inside the Indiana Theater while children can send a letter to Santa Claus via the Terre Haute Children’s Museum. The jolly elf and his wife will appear in person at the corner of Seventh Street and Wabash Avenue about 6:15 p.m. before heading to Mic’s Pics for photo opportunities.
In addition to the returning tents full of crafters and artists which will line the streets, a fourth “Santa’s Hide-A-Way tent” will be erected in the street, complete with heaters, recliners and big screen televisions showing football games, Lloyd said, adding this attractions was brought out of consideration for men who might not be as interested in Christmas shopping but still want to participate.
But for those in pursuit of holiday gifts, the stores will indeed be ready to sell.
Sunday afternoon, Vickey Costello was readying The Passion Window for its first year on the ground level of 7 S. Seventh St. The art gallery’s owner participated in the last two years of the downtown event but was on the second floor of the building, above Crossroads Cafe.
“Actually, I’ve only been downstairs a couple weeks,” she said while hanging ornaments throughout her store.
The gallery features an eclectic mix of artwork including that of local artist Zann Carter, as well as Jody Franklin and Nina Cunningham. Paintings, jewelry and crafts fill the walls, and Costello said she’s looking forward to another holiday season downtown.
Last year’s Miracle on Seventh Street festivities had visitors standing in a line outside her second floor store, and this year she’s optimistic about an even better turnout.
“You learn each year,” she said.
Ray Chen, director of the Halcyon Contemporary Art Gallery, said the show rooms on Seventh and Ohio streets will likewise be full Friday night. Two jewelry exhibits, one international and one Hoosier, will be hosted there, as well as the opening for artist Evalyn Gertrude James, which will run through December.
Chen assumed directorship of the gallery in January, and this will be his first year participating in the holiday festival.
“We are very excited and we’ve been preparing all the exhibitions for the week,” he said, adding it’s a great way to involve the community in the gallery’s work.
John Stadler’s Barber Shop at Wabash Avenue and Fifth Street will help trim customers’ hair before they go home to trim a pine tree. Stadler said in addition to cookies and hot chocolate, the shop will offer discounted hair cuts for $5 each between 5 and 10 p.m.
“We’ll be open all day,” he said, noting his excitement at participating in the event this year since moving to his new location.
Restaurants throughout the blocks will also be open extra hours, and inside Chava’s Mexican Grill at 669 Wabash Ave., manager Shauna Smith said burritos and fajitas will help put the spirit of a “Feliz Navidad” into the air. The Mexican grill will offer $1 off purchases of $10 or more, she said.
“We’re excited for it being down,” she said Sunday afternoon. “We’re glad to be part of it.”
