Contract signed for new Y

Clay County YMCA to run facility

TERRE HAUTE — Papers are signed and the ink is in place for a new YMCA to operate in Terre Haute.

Members of the Terre Haute Parks and Recreation board met for a called meeting Thursday afternoon to sign the lease agreement concerning the former Riverbank Family and Fitness Center. The YMCA of Clay County could assume control of the property perhaps as early as this weekend, officials said.

Representatives of the YMCA of Clay County did not attend the meeting inside the parks department’s Fairbanks Park office. That meeting began at 4 p.m., ending about seven minutes later as the final lease was signed.

Parks superintendent Eddie Bird said the document has gone back and forth between the two organizations as minor wording changes were made. An opening date for the facility has not yet been determined, he said, adding the property has been empty for nearly a year and will probably require some cleaning.

A message left for Deb Plummer, CEO of YMCA of Clay County, was not returned Thursday evening.

According to a copy of the document presented at the meeting, the terms begin Feb. 15 and continue through Feb. 14, 2015. An option to renew for an additional three years may be exercised at that point given both parties’ consent. The YMCA shall pay no rent during the first 12 months of the lease. Beginning with the second year, the rent will be $2,500 per month, according to the document.

The city will continue to pay all utilities for the property for the first two months of the lease. During the third and fourth months, the YMCA will begin paying a third of the utilities, graduating to two-thirds during the fifth and sixth months, and all utilities by the seventh month.

Bird said he’s glad to see the facility move out of the city’s hands and into those of the YMCA, a group that seems a perfect fit from his perspective.

The parks department assumed control on behalf of the city when the Riverbank Family and Fitness Center closed in December of 2010. The property has remained vacant since that time, although the department has paid for the utilities and maintenance.

“Any time you take on an extra expense it’s tough,” Bird said, pointing out those costs came late in the year and had not been factored into his 2011 budget.

Meanwhile, the community has missed its indoor pool and basketball court, he said.

“I think it’s a great thing for the public,” he said of the agreement. “Only good things will come from this.”
