Two injured when car hits moped

TERRE HAUTE — Two residents remained in hospitals Sunday afternoon following an accident the evening before.

According to staff at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, David L. Scott, 43, Terre Haute, remained in the critical care unit there Sunday afternoon. Meanwhile April M. Davis, 29, Terre Haute, remained in fair condition at Union Hospital.

The accident occurred about 10:30 p.m. in Seelyville on U.S. 40 in front the Lost Creek Township Trustee’s office. According to a media release issued by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, the accident involved a collision between a 1997 Buick Skylark and a moped.

The driver of the car, Ryan D. Key, Indianapolis, was reportedly traveling west in the passing lane of  U.S. 40 when, he said, a vehicle in front of him made a quick lane change. Key reportedly told deputies he came upon the rear of the moped in front of him and tried to swerve to avoid a collision. According to the release, Key said he was traveling between 30 and 35 miles per hour at the time of impact and could not avoid collision.

Davis, driver of the moped, was reportedly thrown from it at the time of impact. She was transported to Union Hospital and remained there Sunday in fair condition, according to hospital staff.

Scott, a passenger on the moped, was reportedly ejected into the car’s windshield. He was transported by helicopter to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis in critical condition.

Key reportedly sustained no injuries in the accident, but was arrested on suspicion of operating a vehicle while under the influence of a controlled substance, possession of paraphernalia and driving with a suspended license. He  also was cited for driving with expired license plates and operating a vehicle without proof of financial responsibility.

According to the Vigo County Jail’s automated inmate information system, he remained in custody Sunday afternoon with bail set at $10,000. He is scheduled to appear in Vigo County Superior Court Division 5 at 1:30 p.m. Monday.
