Police recapture man being sought for escape

TERRE HAUTE — A man wanted for escape from the Vigo County Community Corrections was arrested Tuesday afternoon after the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department received a report of a suspicious man near a convenience store at Lafayette and Park avenues.

Bruce E. Thomas, 37, was arrested nearby, on Lafayette near Hollywood Avenue, according to a news release.

Thomas also had active arrest warrants out of Vigo County Division 3 Court for burglary, a class-C felony, and two counts of auto theft, one a class-D felony and the other a class-C felony.

The report was received from off-duty Terre Haute Police Officer Travis Chesshir.

Vigo Sheriff’s First Sgt. Scott Brown located a man at a vacant car wash on Lafayette. During questioning, Thomas did not reveal his identity.

Police said that because of a report that Thomas might have a firearm and that he had been heard making statements that he would not be rearrested, Brown did not let Thomas know that he knew his true identity and allowed Thomas to walk south on Lafayette.

Brown kept Thomas in view and called for backup. Several Terre Haute Police officers assisted in arresting Thomas, who did not resist arrest. No weapons or contraband were found on his person, police said in the news release.

Assisting officers from THPD were John Hopper, Pete Frederick, Sgt. Richard Wallace and the off-duty Chesshir. Seelyville Town Marshal Jason Parker also assisted.

Hopper transported Thomas to the Vigo County Jail, where he was charged with the two arrest warrants.
