Linton schools put on lockdown

Info received by principal prompts heightened security

LINTON — A possible threat to students resulted in a lockdown for all three Linton-Stockton School Corp. buildings on Monday.

As of 4 p.m. Monday, Linton Police reported that no threatening incidents occurred during the heightened police presence throughout the school day.

The lockdown was in response to information received by elementary principal Kent Brewer last week. Neither school officials nor police would specify what type of threat was received or what the target could be.

Parents of Linton-Stockton students were notified about the lockdown on Sunday, said Linton Police Lt. Duane Collenbaugh.

“Parents had advance notice to see if they wanted to send their kids to school,” Collenbaugh said, explaining that an Outreach phone system sent an automated message to registered households in the school system.

Collenbaugh said that because Linton Police staff a Drug Abuse Resistance Education (D.A.R.E.) program in the school system, an officer is usually present at the schools each day. On Monday, more officers were present at each building. Visitors were screened before being admitted to the buildings. And students were escorted when walking from building to building.

According to a statement issued Monday by Superintendent Nick Karazsia, the information given to Brewer did not name specific students or give a time or place when or where an incident might occur.

Brewer contacted the Linton Police Department after he received the information, and the local police investigated the threat.

The lockdown included heightened security in all school district buildings, in addition to increased police presence on the campus, which includes elementary, middle and high schools.

“As always we will continue to remain watchful and alert to any problems or concerns that arise,” Karazsia said in the statement. “Our school staff and the police department work diligently to provide a safe school environment. We investigate every rumor or threat, and every threat is taken very seriously because we care very deeply about the safety of every student and staff member in our schools.”
