Emergency responders rescue two people stuck in Wabashiki waters

TERRE HAUTE — Cold waters west of town proved dangerous for two local people trapped there Saturday evening.

According to a news release issued by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, emergency responders received a call via cell phone at 6:42 p.m. Saturday, advising that the male caller and his girlfriend were stuck in water inside the Wabashiki Fish and Wildlife Area. Their location was reportedly east of the levee, east of the water tower in West Terre Haute by the elementary school.

Multiple agencies responded to the call, including Sugar Creek Task Force 7 Water Rescue, Indiana Conservation officer Jason Sullivan, deputies and Terre Haute City Police, as well as the Sugar Creek Fire Department.

According to the release, the subjects were both heard screaming for help upon responders’ arrival and were found trapped up to their knees in the brackish, muddy water.

Arica Wellman, 20, was transported by air to an Indianapolis hospital for severe hypothermia, while Branden Chandler, 21, was taken by Trans Care to Regional Hospital of Terre Haute for the same.

According to personnel at Methodist Hospital on Sunday afternoon, Wellman had been discharged. Staff at Regional Hospital had no listing for Chandler on Sunday.
