TERRE HAUTE —
A Terre Haute man faces 21 criminal charges for his alleged involvement in two armed robberies in which residents were battered and held at gunpoint.
Jamar E. Dashillas, 18, appeared Friday morning in Vigo Superior Court 3 where Judge David R. Bolk read all 21 charges related to burglaries and robberies on Jan. 11 and Jan. 26.
His alleged co-conspirator — 18-year-old Derice Shane Hammond Jr. of Indianapolis — has been charged with armed robbery in Vigo Superior Court 1.
The charges filed Friday against Dashillas include 18 felonies, comprised:
• class-A felonies — two counts of conspiracy to commit burglary resulting in bodily injury, and two counts of burglary resulting in bodily injury;
• class-B felonies — two counts of conspiracy to commit burglary resulting in bodily injury, two counts of robbery resulting in bodily injury, conspiracy to commit armed robbery, armed robbery, and criminal confinement with a deadly weapon;
• class-C felonies – two counts of criminal confinement, and battery by means of a deadly weapon;
• and class-D felonies — two counts of theft, impersonating a law enforcement officer, and pointing a firearm.
He has also been charged with three counts of battery resulting in bodily injury, all class-A misdemeanors.
Terre Haute Police report that Dashillas and Hammond along with another unidentified male, forced their way into a home on Jan. 11 while two people were in the residence. Both residents were injured in the incident, and the suspects allegedly took money, a cell phone and a laptop computer.
Police report that on Jan. 26, Dashillas and Hammond were again accompanied by another unidentified male when they allegedly forced their way into a home while three people were inside. The suspects allegedly took electronics, a computer and money in that incident. A resident of the home was also struck with the butt end of a rifle, and a handgun was allegedly pointed at another resident.
Judge Bolk appointed a public defender for Dashillas and set another hearing on Monday to establish trial dates.
Hammond appeared in Division 1 court on Thursday, where Judge John Roach appointed a public defender and set March 4 hearing date.
Hammond was recently sentenced in Division 1 on an unrelated case of class-B felony aggravated battery. He received a 10-year sentence suspended to probation. However, a probation violation was filed in that case Friday, stemming from the new criminal charges.
