United Day raises $18,200 — and that doesn’t include Dine United efforts

TERRE HAUTE — The results of a community-wide united push for charity were still being tabulated Saturday, with all signs pointing toward success.

Troy Fears, executive of the United Way of the Wabash Valley, said Friday’s United Day for United Way program brought out more than 120 volunteers from multiple counties and backgrounds.

“We know we raised $18,200 yesterday, and that did not include Dine United,” he said, explaining receipts from the 15 restaurants participating in the mass effort were not yet in Saturday. “It was another great turnout.”

Now in its seventh year, the multi-faceted effort was expected to raise $20,000 toward the United Way’s goal of $1.86 million. In addition to regular donations, volunteers pumped gas and bagged groceries at Baesler’s Market for tips, and store owner Bob Baesler offered a 6 cent per gallon discount on fuel.

Fears reported that the Vigo County School Corp. donated more than $6,000 through system-wide efforts such as “Dollar for Denim Days.”

The campaign was at about 95 percent of its goal going into Friday and efforts will continue through the organization’s annual dinner Feb. 4.

Fears said the majority of donations which support the organization come from “workplace donations” and automatic payroll donations, but “leadership giving” by individuals and programs such as United Day constitute a sizable amount.
