Anytime Fitness remodeling Third Street building for third Terre Haute location

TERRE HAUTE — Anytime Fitness will soon add a third location in Terre Haute, expanding into a renovated building on the site of former restaurants along Third Street, just south of Poplar Street.

Atterson Brothers LLC is in the process of remodeling and expanding a building at 322 S. Third St., which formerly housed Thompson’s Restaurant and, most recently, a Mexican restaurant.

Todd and Chad Atterson own the property, while Chad Atterson owns the fitness franchises. County records show the Attersons purchased the property, which is nearly an acre with four lots, from RDT (Robert D. Thompson) Realty in September 2008, for $715,000. Thompson Honda previously had used the corner of Third and Poplar to display some vehicles for sale and point to the First Street location of the business, which is now in the process of relocating several miles south, adjacent to Toyota of Terre Haute.

“It is an excellent location especially with a lot of the downtown starting to thrive again, so it can be that much easier for somebody to come in on a lunch time or right after work” to exercise, said Chad Atterson, owner of the Anytime Fitness franchises in Terre Haute.

“You will be able to use all three locations in Terre Haute when this is completed along with any of the more than 2,100 Anytime Fitness locations [nationwide and abroad]. We realize people want something convenient, whether it is close to home or work, where you can get a quick workout in,” he said. “We are trying to do away with the excuses. It is hard to stay motivated and live a healthy lifestyle.”

The location is close to nearby professional offices, including a UAP clinic and GE Aviation.

The first Anytime Fitness opened in December 2008 on Terre Haute’s eastside at the corner Fruitridge Avenue and Wabash Avenue. A second location at Springhill Drive and Seventh Street opened in December 2009.

The new location will have two-thirds of the building for Anytime Fitness, with a leased space for the remainder of the south side of the building. That is similar to the eastside facility, which was also a new building when opened, Atterson said. It shares space with a Baskin-Robbins ice cream store.

The Springhill location, which formerly housed a bicycle business, has a larger space, allowing for exercise classes such as Zumba and yoga. “Each location is somewhat different,” Atterson said.

The new facility will likely add four part-time workers. Anytime Fitness currently has about 15 part-time employees, Atterson said.

“It is working out really well in Terre Haute,” Atterson said of the business.

The facilities have strength-training areas with free weights and cardiovascular exercise bikes and treadmills with viewing screens.

After joining, a patron gets a key fob that provides access on a 24-hour, seven-day-a-week basis. Each facility is locked “with security systems and safety components in place, so you do feel comfortable whether it is 2 o’clock in the afternoon or 2 o’clock in the morning,” Atterson said.
