Four people arrested for allegedly committing 30 residential break-ins

TERRE HAUTE — Stolen items dropped in an alley and in yards led police to arrest four people Thursday in connection with a series of burglaries.

Shawn Roberts, 21, along with 18-year-olds David Bolinger, Nygel Holmes and Jacob Hanna appeared Friday morning in Vigo Superior Court 3 where Detective Julia Dierdorf said police believe the suspects are responsible for about 30 break-ins in their neighborhood.

Sometime between 3 and 7 a.m., a home in the 1500 block of Barber Avenue was burglarized, Dierdorf told the Tribune-Star.

“We’ve been working on it for the last three months,” she said. “We’ve been waiting to get them.”

The suspects left footprints and dropped some of the stolen items as they allegedly made their way back to a home in the 1500 block of Woodley Avenue where a juvenile friend of the group resides.

Dierdorf testified that police have investigated 30 other burglaries within an isolated area, and police suspect the four defendants, as well as others, of being involved in those cases.

The suspects have taken “anything they can carry away” from the scene, she said, declining to speculate on what they have been doing with stolen items such as electronics and jewelry.

All four defendants are to return to court on Wednesday for the filing of formal charges. Bond is set at $65,000 cash only for each defendant.
