Public help sought after armed robbery

TERRE HAUTE — Public assistance is being requested as authorities search for a man accused of robbing a woman at gunpoint Friday evening.

According to a news release issued by the Indiana State Police, the incident occurred about 9:20 p.m. Friday as a 44-year-old female was driving to work near East Battleford Drive and South Sullivan Place in southern Vigo County. While en route, she reportedly encountered a man standing in the road waving his arms to stop. After stopping, she reportedly attempted to dial 911 on her cell phone, but the man entered her vehicle from the passenger side and displayed a handgun. The suspect reportedly took her cell phone and forced her to drive to the ATM at U.S. 41 and Harlan Drive and withdraw $400.

According to the release, the suspect moved to the rear of the vehicle to avoid the ATM’s camera, and after receiving the money, forced the victim to drive around several Vigo County roadways. The vehicle reportedly stalled because of low fuel on East Colglazier Drive near the Vigo and Sullivan county line, at which point the suspect took the keys, threw them in a ditch, and fled north on foot. After finding her keys, the victim was able to start her vehicle and travel south into Farmersburg where, at 10:45 p.m., she found an Indiana State Trooper.

A K-9 unit from the Sullivan County Sheriff’s office was able to track the suspect for some distance from the scene, but he was not located. The suspect was described as a white male, 5 feet 7 inches to 5 feet 9 inches, small build, weighing between 140 and 155 pounds. He is reportedly clean-shaven with a rough voice, possibly in his early 20s, wearing dark pants, dark jacket, and black toboggan style cap. No other information is available concerning the handgun.

Individuals with information in the case, or who might have given the suspect a ride, are urged to call ISP Trooper Brent Robinson at the Putnamville Post, 765-653-4114.
