Windy winter storm passes after blustery interruption

TERRE HAUTE — Blustery conditions remained in place Friday morning as commuters made their trips, but it was nothing like winds on Thursday.

The National Weather Service reports a peak wind Thursday at 52 miles per hour in Terre Haute. Winds ranged from 33 to 52 miles per hour.

Vigo County had 350 customers without power Thursday evening, according to Duke Energy.

Bill Glass, assistant street commissioner for Terre Haute, said wind was the biggest factor Thursday evening, but not as much of a concern Friday.

“It was not much snow, about an inch or so, but you had to work it like a big one. We had some trees that came across some roads,” he said.

According to Vigo County Central Dispatch, emergency personnel responded to 24 slide offs and 29 accidents on Thursday and Friday.

The high temperature today may hit about 36, dipping to about 27 tonight. Temperatures will warm up to around 43 by Sunday with an overnight low of about 27.

Daytime on Christmas Eve may see a high of 40 and a 20 percent chance of rain, with a nighttime low of 29 for Santa’s delivery.

The National Weather Service sees a 40 percent chance of snow on Christmas Day.
