Terre Haute man charged with impersonating officer

TERRE HAUTE — A man who allegedly accosted two people at a pharmacy has been arrested and charged with impersonating a public servant, a class-D felony, and two misdemeanor counts of battery.

John D. Shahadey, 47, of Terre Haute, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 1 on Monday where Judge John Roach set a Feb. 14 trial date in the case.

Shahadey was arrested Friday afternoon on a warrant issued by Roach.

The information filed with the court states that a woman told police she was at a pharmacy in the 900 block of Poplar Street on May 2 when Shahadey grabbed and twisted her arm after the woman stepped up to a counter to get a prescription. The woman told police that Shahadey told her to sit down, shut her mouth and wait her turn. The woman also reported that Shahadey alleged said he was a police officer and would “cuff” her.

The woman’s husband told police he witnessed the incident, and that Shahadey also grabbed him by the face. The couple allege that Shahadey said he was “going to get my meds first.”

Detective Darren Long reported that he interviewed pharmacy employees about the incident, and said video surveillance showed that Shahadey grabbed the woman’s arm and grabbed the man’s face.

When interviewed by police about the incident, Shahadey said he grabbed the woman’s arm because he thought she was going to hit him. And he said he did not remember touching the man. Shahadey also denied to the detective that he told the couple he was a police officer.

Shahadey was released from the Vigo County Jail on Friday after posting bail. He appeared in court Monday, accompanied by an attorney.

His next court appearance is set for Dec. 14 in Division 1.
