Food destroyed, driver cited after ISP inspection

A routine Indiana State Police inspection of a food delivery truck this morning in Clay County led to the destruction of part of the food, which was transported in unsafe conditions, and a citation for the driver.

At 10:45 a.m., ISP Master Trooper Kent Winstead stopped a white Mitsubishi refrigerated food delivery truck for a routine inspection in the westbound lanes of Interstate 70 near the 23-mile marker.

Winstead is  a commercial vehicle enforcement officer.

During inspection of the cargo area, Winstead found that about 40 dozen eggs had tumbled onto the floor, broke open and deposited a large amount of liquid egg yolk.

Lying in the yolk were about five pounds of mushrooms and 10 pounds of broccoli, which also had fallen and separated from their box containers.

The five pounds of mushrooms and 10 pounds of broccoli were seized by Clay County Health Department investigator Jane Stark and destroyed. The remainder of the meat and vegetable load was not in violation and not seized.

The driver, Dong Xie, age 40, of Fontana, Calif., was cited  for a class A infraction of transporting food not in compliance with health department rules.

The delivery company was Eternal Trading Corp. of Cincinnati, Ohio, and the food was bound for Asian-style food restaurants in Terre Haute.
