Terre Haute man admits to shooting, gets 30-year sentence

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man received a 30-year prison sentence Monday after admitting that he shot a motel clerk at the Royal Inn in October 2011.

Joseph A. Sims, 29, appeared in Vigo Superior Court 6 where he pleaded guilty to attempted armed robbery resulting in serious bodily injury, a class-A felony. Sentencing followed what was agreed upon in a plea agreement.

The shooting incident was captured on surveillance video, and showed a subject entering the lobby of the hotel on North Third Street. The hotel clerk approaches the desk to serve the man, and then the video shows the subject firing a handgun at the clerk, who was hospitalized for his injuries and later released.

Sims was arrested days later in Ellettsville after getting into an altercation and being arrested in Monroe County.

His trial had been set for Nov. 26.
