Sycamores Ridge Strutters giving away turkeys

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County turkey enthusiasts are doing their part to make this a happy Thanksgiving for needy families.

The Sycamore Ridge Strutters chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation will be giving away 75 frozen turkeys from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Wednesday at the Booker T. Washington Community Center in Terre Haute.

“It’s very important for us to give back,” said Cinda Inman, chapter secretary. “Turkey hunters care. We do want to help needy families.”

The frozen turkeys will weigh between 12 and 14 pounds each, Inman said. The giveaway will be on a first-come, first-served basis with a limit of one per household.

The Booker T. Washington Community Center is at South 13th Street and College Avenue.

This is the fourth year the Sycamore Ridge Strutters have given away Thanksgiving turkeys in Terre Haute. This year, the turkey giveaway is being coordinated through the United Way of the Wabash Valley.

“We are thrilled that the Sycamore Ridge Strutters chapter of the National Wild Turkey Federation made this very generous gift to our community,” said United Way executive director Troy Fears in a news release issued Monday. “This will help ensure that many families in the area will have a Thanksgiving to remember.”

The National Wild Turkey Federation is a not-for-profit wildlife conservation group based in Edgefield, S.C. The group, which has helped conserve millions of acres of wildlife habitat, has chapters in all 50 states and Canada, according to its website, www.nwtf.org.
