2012 Vigo County Fair nearing an end

TERRE HAUTE — Dusty boots tread the fairgrounds trails, as one more year wraps up for the Vigo County 4-H Fair.

A few new faces oversaw operations at the 83rd Annual Vigo County 4-H Fair, presented by First Financial Bank.

Katarina Walker, Vigo County’s extension educator for health and human services, came aboard just last year after completing her graduate work at Purdue University.

“It was wonderful,” she said Friday afternoon inside the exhibit hall. “It was really exciting to see everything come together and see people willing to showcase all their hard work.”

Among the 1,100 exhibitors participating in this year’s event were 70 entries into the inaugural King Arthur brownie baking contest, she said, noting that company is among the oldest in the country. To have that many competitors in the first-ever event was a big plus, she said.

Sarah Gaughan likewise finished  her first Vigo County Fair as the extension service’s 4-H Youth Leader. A former 10-year member of the Johnson County 4-H program, Gaughan’s first day on the job was June 12, about five weeks ago. This year more than 1,000 youth participated in the local 4-H program amid one of the hottest years on record.

“It broke just in time that Sunday,” she said of the heat wave featuring multiple days where temperatures exceeded 100 degrees.

Gaughan and others were helping serve dinner to buyers at the annual 4-H auction, where nearly 300 individuals had registered to bid on the fair’s animals.

Bailey Bergherm, 18, said her 10th and final year in the program had her showing meat goats and cattle. This year, the future Ivy Tech and Purdue University student said the showmanship element went particularly well for her.

“It went wonderful. I think I ended my 10th year with a boom,” she said.

Cory Edge, 18, said he’ll be attending Blackhawk Community College this fall on a livestock judging scholarship. Hoping to major in agriculture education and animal science, the 10-year 4-H’er said the organization’s camaraderie is among his favorite aspects.

“I like the showing and the competition,” he said. “And being around friends that share the same passion.”
