Covenant Food Pantry closes its doors

TERRE HAUTE — Covenant Cooperative Ministry has temporarily closed Covenant Food Pantry, according to a news release issued Tuesday.

CCM had operated the food pantry for 10 years, but a  shortage of food and volunteers, along with rising food prices and budget shortfalls, led to the decision, said Rose Aycock, executive director.

“It is challenging to find loyal, trustworthy volunteers who have the time to help with the distribution, and with skyrocketing utilities and operating costs facing the ministry, we must use wisdom in making cutbacks where needed,” Aycock said in the release.

The ministry will continue the diaper distribution to families when supplies and volunteers are available, the news release stated.

“I am reminded of the words of [Saint] Mother Theodore Guerin, founder of St. Mary-of-the-Woods College,” Aycock said in the news release. “It is not for us to do all the good in the world, only that which we can do. CCM is known for doing much: food and diaper distribution, food bank serving 140 food pantries in 18 counties, summer fans, Back to School and Angel Tree programs as well as holiday food baskets.

“And yet available funds are limited and financial contributions fall short of what is needed to continue these programs. I know our programs are vital to this community, but after 10 years of volunteer service, I find it is not possible for me to continue to volunteer full time any longer. We really need more Christians to help in ministry, more volunteers to help if our programs are to continue. We need financial contributions,” Aycock said in a news release.

The ministry will begin in mid-September to evaluate the Christmas projects known as Teen Angels & Little Angel Trees and to determine a schedule of programs for 2013.

“We hope local churches, businesses and individuals will continue to support our programs so the work the ministry does in the community might continue,” Aycock stated. “We don’t know what 2013 will bring, but we do need to know funds will be there, then and now, to continue our work. We are very grateful to those who have supported the ministry for the past 10 years,” she said.

CCM is located at 122 S. 101⁄2 St. in Terre Haute.
