Motorcyclist dies, motorist charged after accident

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man has died of injuries he sustained in a two-motorcycle, one-car crash that also injured another motorcyclist late Tuesday. The incident has led to the arrest of the car’s driver.

Leylahnd A. Owens, 22, of the 2800 block of Maple Avenue, died Wednesday at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis.

Jacob T. Quinn, 24, of Terre Haute, was also airlifted to Methodist Hospital with multiple injuries to his left leg, arms, face and forehead. He was listed in good condition Wednesday evening.

Both Owens and Quinn were riding motorcycles.

Police have charged Travis A. Ley, 35, of Terre Haute, with two counts of driving while intoxicated resulting in serious bodily injury. Ley was the driver of a 2003 Toyota Camry that collided with the two Suzuki motorcycles driven by Owens and Quinn.

Terre Haute Police were called to the intersection of Hulman and 17th streets at 10:46 p.m.

Officer Jonathan Sweatt reported that when he arrived at the scene, both Owens and Quinn were lying on the ground west of the accident scene and both appeared severely injured.

Sweatt said Owens appeared to have severe head trauma and had stopped breathing, while Quinn was conscious but in severe pain.

Owens was transported to Terre Haute Regional Hospital then airlifted to Methodist Hospital, while Quinn was transported to Union Hospital then airlifted to Indianapolis.

Ley reportedly told Sweatt that he was driving south on 17th Street turning left onto Hulman and did not see any approaching vehicles before the impact. Sweatt reported that Ley said he had just left a local bar where he had consumed beer. A toxicology test revealed that Ley had a 0.16 percent blood-alcohol content, twice the legal limit.

Ley was booked into the Vigo County Jail. He made an initial appearance in Vigo Superior Court 5 on Wednesday, where he was appointed a public defender and given an Oct. 4 trial date on two class-D felony charges of driving while intoxicated resulting in serious bodily injury.

His bail was set at $25,000 with no 10 percent allowed.
