RONN MOTT’S MINUTE: ‘Political Super Pacs’

TERRE HAUTE — The Supreme Court has told us it is not constitutional to restrict how much money someone can put into a super political action committee. While some of us make contributions to a political party or candidate, our efforts are minuscule compared to the money being stuffed into “Super Pacs.” Imagine being concerned about this! Imagine how good it could be not to have to worry about the political machine that is the government of the United States.

These millionaires and billionaires can do the job for us and we, the common citizens, will not have to worry about it. I would like to think that Americans are smarter than this, but I’m here to tell you that we are not.

In depression-wracked Germany, the citizens of that well-educated, well-informed country elected Adolph Hitler. His promise was to restore pride and order and, oh yes, jobs to the voters of the fatherland. Well, you know what happened. And most of you think it cannot happen here.

So, go ahead, agree with the super rich that it is their place to determine our destiny, and it is our place to behave like good, little citizens and do their bidding.

My thought is now, and it has been for a long time, don’t live any farther from the Canadian border that five or six hours. It may be our only English-speaking sanctuary. (Of course, Quebec isn’t English-speaking.)

Ronn Mott, a longtime radio personality in Terre Haute, writes commentaries for the Tribune-Star. His pieces are published Tuesday and Thursday on Tribstar.com, and in the print and online editions on Saturday.
