Minor injury for man struck by semitrailer

TERRE HAUTE — A 58-year-old homeless man sustained minor injuries when he pushed his bicycle in front of a semitrailer on U.S. 41 north of Oak Street at 10:23 p.m. Monday.

Terre Haute Police report that the 2012 Ryder truck was northbound in the far left lane when the pedestrian stepped off the median curb into the path of the semi. Driver Richard Ball, 78, of Round Lake, Ill.., told police that he swerved and tried to stop but could not avoid the man.

The pedestrian, who had a .23 percent blood-alcohol content, told police he did not see the oncoming semi as he was crossing the highway, and he pushed his bike into the northbound lane where he was struck.

The pedestrian was taken to Union Hospital where he was treated for minor bleeding to his head and then released.

The semi driver was not ticketed.

The bicycle was taken to the THPD bicycle locker.
