Shooting suspect sought by Terre Haute police

TERRE HAUTE — Police are seeking a suspect in a Sunday night shooting in Terre Haute that has sent one man to an Indianapolis hospital.

Suspect Clarence Sandifer, 36, is described as a black male about 6-feet-1 inches tall, weighing about 230 pounds, with brown hair and brown eyes.

The shooting happened after 8 p.m. at a home in the 2000 block of North 13th Street near Maple Avenue.

Detective Ed Thompkins of the Terre Haute Police Department said that the suspect fled from the area following the shooting. Sandifer was alleged to be the suspect by people who witnessed the shooting.

Investigators report that Sandifer was allegedly involved in a domestic dispute with a woman earlier on Sunday, and that woman called the shooting victim to come to her assistance. The victim and a friend helped the allegedly battered woman get away from Sandifer to a safe location.

Thompkins said that Sandifer allegedly went to the shooting victim’s house and barged in while the victim and others were inside watching television. The victim reportedly escorted Sandifer out of the house, and the two began wrestling in the yard.

During the struggle, Sandifer allegedly shot the victim in the chest with a small caliber handgun. A witness inside the home went into the yard and tackled Sandifer, who dropped the weapon and fled the scene.

The gun was recovered as evidence, Thompkins said.

The shooting victim was taken to Union Hospital in Terre Haute, and later transferred to an Indianapolis hospital. Thompkins said his location was not being disclosed because the suspect remained at large today.

Thompkins said Sandifer is wanted on charges related to the shooting, but additional charges could be added as the investigation continues.

Anyone with information on Sandifer’s location can call THPD at 812-238-1661 or Crime Stoppers at 812-238-STOP (7867).
