Winter blasts Wabash Valley

Snowy conditions create travel difficulties; temperatures to remain cold this weekend

TERRE HAUTE — A wintery storm’s weather haggled local traffic and closed Vigo County school activities for the weekend.

Crystal Pettit of the National Weather Service said about 21/2 inches of snow had fallen during the period from 9 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. A total of five inches was expected to be on the ground by 7 a.m. this morning, she said.

“It’s falling very wet and sloppy, but if the temperatures fall over night, that will change into the kind of snow that’s heavier and sticks,” she said Friday afternoon.

Today’s high and low temperatures should hover about the 26-degree mark, staying the same for Sunday, she said, noting a second front will move through by Monday, bringing more snow with it.

According to a news release issued by the Vigo County School Corp., today’s activities have been canceled or re-scheduled.

The Indiana State School Music Association contest originally scheduled at Terre Haute North Vigo High School has been rescheduled for Feb. 13.

The Indiana High School Athletic Association will continue its plans to host wrestling and swimming tournaments this weekend but athletes should contact their coaches to check for time changes.

Troopers from the Indiana State Police’s Terre Haute Post responded to five crashes and seven slide-offs with only one motorist reporting a mechanical problem by 5 p.m. Friday evening.

Interstate 70 appeared to be running smoothly, according to a news release issued by the post. Sgt. Joe Watts of the ISP advises motorists to use extra caution and allow plenty of time for travel. Also, citizens can access www.TrafficWise.IN.gov or call 1-800-261-7623 for conditions.

Citizens are advised against calling the post for information.
