Afternoon accident in Sullivan County kills one

TERRE HAUTE — A Sullivan County accident proved fatal for one of the two drivers Thursday afternoon.

According to a media release issued by the Indiana State Police, the accident occurred at 5:03 p.m. on U.S. 41 at Sullivan County Road 950 North.

A pickup truck hauling a box trailer was reportedly driving north on U.S. 41 when a 1998 Ford Taurus, headed west on County Road 950 North, pulled into its path.

According to the release, the pickup veered left in an effort to avoid the collision, but still struck the car in its driver’s side. The driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene by Sullivan County Deputy Coroner Dave Rollison after being extricated by members of the Thunderbird Fire/Rescue and Shelburn Fire Departments.

The pickup was reportedly driven by Shawn R. Hadley, 35, Terre Haute. He and his two passengers were wearing seatbelts and were not injured, according to the release.

The deceased was reportedly not wearing a seatbelt, and the name was not released that evening pending positive identification and notification of relatives.

According to the release, a “concerned citizen” had called 911 at 4:30 p.m., reporting a tan Ford Taurus with an Indiana registration plate driving “all over the roadway” and “driving in the median.” ISP and the Farmersburg Town Marshal were dispatched to the area, and officers report seeing the vehicle just moments before it turned down a county road. The registration number reported by the caller matched that of the car driven by the deceased, according to the release.

The investigation was ongoing that evening and the coroner’s office was awaiting toxicology test results.
