‘Four-legged furry’ kids descend for Bark in the Park

TERRE HAUTE —

The merry sound of barking dogs echoed throughout Fairbanks Park, as hundreds celebrated their pets with a walk in the sunshine.

Stephanie Boyd, owner of Hallie Hound Barkery and one of Bark in the Park’s organizers, had both Guido and Hallie there with her, dogs which she joked double as corporate executives in her business which produces gourmet animal treats.

“This is perfect weather and a great turnout,” she said amid temperatures in the middle 70s.

The fifth annual Bark in the Park kicked off at 10:15 a.m. in the park along the Wabash River, as more than 300 pet owners brought their pals for a three-mile walk about the trails.

Boyd said the event raised nearly $11,000 for the Terre Haute Humane Society.

Initially launched by the Terre Haute Young Leaders, the event this year was run for the first time by the Humane Society, Boyd said, crediting First Financial Bank as the lead sponsor.

This weekend the shelter at 1811 S. Fruitridge Ave. sponsored an adopt-a-thon for “bully breeds” of dogs, she said, referencing pit bulls in particular.

“There’s some really nice dogs in there,” she said, explaining breeds such as pit bulls are tough to adopt out because of their reputations.

This weekend, special discounts were available for adoptions, she said.

Meanwhile, the event featured K9 demonstrations by the Terre Haute Police Department, microchipping for dogs and DNA testing to determine the backgrounds of mixed breeds.

Kevin Powers said he was considering having a DNA test performed for Trooper, a dog he recently adopted.

“He’s a rescue,” the Terre Haute resident said, explaining he first began fostering him after moving here from Kansas. “I’d rather rescue a dog than go through a breeder.”

Ashley Strohm also said she enjoys working with needy animals. Now in her third year volunteering at the shelter, Strohm and her husband, Fred, currently host two dogs in foster care in addition to their own four.

The two specialize in “fearful and feral dogs,” those which have been abused and abandoned.

“You’re giving these homeless animals a second chance on life,” she said, adding the dogs are family.

“My children are my four-legged furry children.”
