The Vigo County School Board will discuss a proposed, new teacher evaluation system when it meets at 6 p.m. Monday.
A new state law will require districts to evaluate their teachers annually, and teacher pay is to be linked to these evaluations.
According to StateImpact Indiana, under the new Indiana law, schools must use an assessment that includes objective data — such as scores on standardized tests — and link teacher performance to pay. But the state doesn’t spell out what system districts must use.
The Indiana Department of Education has developed a tool that any district can use, called “RISE,” according to StateImpact Indiana.
At the heart of the system is a rubric, or scorecard, that rates teachers on different criteria meant to evaluate how well they plan lessons, teach classes and lead their peers.
StateImpact Indiana is a collaboration of WFIU, Indiana Public Broadcasting stations and NPR to explain the effects of state education policy on people’s lives.
The RISE evaluation is a discussion item, according to the Vigo County School Board agenda.
Also Monday, the board will be asked to approve advertisement of the 2013 budget. The general fund budget would be advertised at $107 million; debt service fund, $8.6 million; capital projects fund, $19.1 million; school transportation fund, $6.7 million; and the bus replacement fund, $2.1 million.
A public hearing is scheduled for Aug. 27, and the budget would then be adopted Sept. 10.
As part of its consent agenda, the board will be asked to approve a contract with Majeur Won to design canopy entryways for 13 Vigo County schools. The international design agency, based in Paris, France, was founded earlier this year by Matthew Won Piker, who attended Vigo County schools and graduated from Terre Haute South in 2004.
The district has negotiated a contract with Majeur Won for $78,000 to design the 13 entryways, and Majeur Won has already begun meeting with schools to get their feedback and ideas.
Under personnel, the board will be asked to approve Scotia Brown as the new principal at McLean High School. She would replace Rick Stevens, who pursued a position in the administration building as an assistant director of student services. The board also will act on Stevens’ change of assignment.
