TERRE HAUTE —
Voter registration ends Oct. 4 for the upcoming Nov. 2 general election, but this year marks the first time Hoosiers can go online to register or download a registration form.
The online registration site is www.indianavoters.com.
As of Thursday, 4,614 voter registration applications have been submitted online since the tool was launched July 1, according to the Indiana Secretary of State’s office.
“Not only can a person register to vote at the Web site, but can also find out who is on their ballot, locate their polling place and view campaign finance records of specific candidates,” Indiana Secretary of State Todd Rokita said in a statement.
To register, a person must have a valid Indiana driver’s license or state-issued ID card to use the online registration form. Once completed, the form is sent to a county voter registration office that verifies address, the driver’s license or state ID, as well ensures a voter is not registered in another county prior approving the voter registration.
Indiana is one of nine states in the nation that allow voters to go online to register to vote, said Kay Stimson, spokeswoman for the National Association of Secretaries of State.
The ninth state, Nevada, however just rolled out online voting on Wednesday but only offers it in Clark County, which contains Las Vegas, Stimson said.
In addition to Indiana and Nevada, other states that offer online registration are Arizona, Colorado, Kansas, Louisiana, Oregon, Utah and Washington. Arizona was the first state to offer online registration in 2002, followed by Washington in 2008.
“It does seem it is part of the evolution of the Help America Vote Act and the mandate from that law that states put together a statewide voter registration database,” Stimson said.
“Now that states have statewide voter registration databases, they are able to start thinking about leveraging technology to improve the voter registration process through online voter registration and other processes that serve voters,” Stimson said.
Janice Morris, director of the Vigo County Voter Registration Office, said voter registration has been slow as of Thursday, with many people still bringing in paper forms. “I think the word about online voter registration is just getting out there to where people notice it,” Morris said.
“I think it is working well. The accuracy on the online registration forms has been good, at least on the forms that have come in,” Morris said. “People are making sure all of the items on the form are filled out.”
Morris said she expects to see many more voters register in mid- to late September, especially from college-age or younger voters. “A lot of fraternities and sororities get points or whatever it is for registering to vote,” Morris said.
In addition, Morris said, the League of Women Voters of Vigo County will conduct their voter registration drive on Sept. 25. That drive is at several locations from 10:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. As of June, Vigo County had 71,883 active voters, Morris said.
Vigo County Clerk Patricia Mansard said it may take time for Vigo County residents to catch on to using the Internet for voter registration.
Mansard said the clerk’s office budget has been cut 22 percent, and cannot distribute as many paper ballots. “We are going to have to refer a lot of people to going online and printing their own out if they want one printed,” Mansard said.
“We are experiencing the same thing from the state. We used to get hard copies of several things, but now you have to go online and get it yourself,” the clerk said. “More and more, [state agencies] are wanting [Hoosiers] to go to the Internet to get information, instead of by mail.”
