Students showcase keen problem-solving skills at Rose-Hulman

TERRE HAUTE — For the 16th straight year, Honey Creek Middle School students came out on top in the Wabash Valley MATHCOUNTS competition at Rose-Hulman Institute of Technology.

The school’s eighth-, seventh- and sixth-grade students posted the top seven individual scores and 10 of the top 11 place finishers. The school will join Greencastle Middle School in representing the regional at the state competition next month at Rose-Hulman.

The regional competition involved students from seven middle schools in Vigo and Putnam counties. Each student participated in three rounds of competition: Sprint — testing quickness to solve problems; Target — testing problem-solving skills; and Team — testing teamwork abilities. Then, the top students squared off in a game show-type Countdown Round, where quick problem-solving skills were exhibited on stage in Rose-Hulman’s Hatfield Hall Theater.

An extra round of problems was needed to break a first-place tie in the individual competition between Honey Creek’s Jared Anklam and Chaman Kumar. Anklam, an eighth grader who placed second last year, defeated his seventh grade teammate by one-tenth of a second in the extra session to capture championship honors. Anklam also went on to win the Countdown Round, defeating Honey Creek seventh grader Amit Chakrabarti in the finals.

Joining Anklam and Kumar on Honey Creek’s winning team were Rita Cui, who placed third, and Chakrabarti, who earned honorable mention honors.  Other students from the school automatically qualifying for the state finals with top-six finishes were seventh graders Julie Lee, fourth; eighth grader Christopher Ray, fifth; and eighth grader Kevin Cao, sixth. The school’s MATHCOUNTS coaches are Fischer and Joann Orman.

Greencastle’s team included eighth graders Zack Wilkerson, eighth overall; Sam Savage, Katie Rose Parsons and Lily Spencer. The team is coached by volunteer Gayle Hansen and teacher Michele Villinski.

Otter Creek Middle School placed third with eighth graders Harry Chambers, Stephen Cornwell and Jamie Macklem joining seventh grader Caaveh Siahmakoun. The team is coached by teacher Chris Stanisz.

Woodrow Wilson was fourth. The team consisted of eighth graders Alexis Price, Noah Prouse and Beddow, and seventh grader Karen McGuire. Coaches are Brian Sullivan and Scherle.

Other schools participating were Chauncey Rose, Sarah Scott and West Vigo.
