Trial date set in shotgun beating death case

TERRE HAUTE — An Oct. 15 trial date has been confirmed for a man accused in the April 2011 beating death of a Terre Haute man.

Anton Grant, 44, formerly of Lafayette, faces a charge of aggravated battery for allegedly beating Raymond Hamilton, 53, with a shotgun in the early morning hours of April 3, 2011, at Hamilton’s apartment in the 1100 block of Seventh Avenue. Hamilton died a few days later.

During a hearing Tuesday in Vigo Superior Court 1, Judge John Roach confirmed Grant’s trial date and said 75 potential jurors would be called for possible service in the trial.

At the time of the incident, Terre Haute Police stated that Hamilton was able to give police the name of a suspect in the case, and told police that he had been beaten with the butt end of a shotgun.

A final pretrial for Grant is also set for Oct. 9.
