Vigo County Sheriff’s Department investigating fatal stabbing

TERRE HAUTE — A Monday night homicide is being investigated by the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department, and a suspect is in custody.

Chief Deputy Clark Cottom reports that at 10:52 p.m., a 911 call was received from a man in the 4400 block of South Eighth Street, Terre Haute. The caller said he had just killed his wife with a knife.

Deputies were met at the front door of the residence by homeowner Robbie Spitler, who surrendered to police without incident.

Inside the home, police found the body of Shawn Singhurse Spitler. She had been stabbed.

Robbie Spitler was transported to the Vigo County Jail where he is being held on a pending charge of murder. He could be charged in court today.

“The motive for the crime was unclear at the time of this release, however early indications are there were no signs of struggle,” Cottom stated in a news release.

An autopsy will be conducted, he added.
