Teen goes to adult court in child neglect case

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute juvenile has been waived into adult court to face a class-B felony child a neglect charge related to the December injury of a 7-week-old infant.

Jesse James Weir, 17, appeared Monday in Vigo Superior Court 3 with his attorney, Mark Stalcup, and requested a bond reduction hearing on Tuesday.

Weir is being held in the Vigo County Jail with bail set at $50,000 with no 10 percent allowed.

The investigation by Detective Rick Decker of the Terre Haute Police Department indicates that Weir was involved in the injuries to the infant, who was hospitalized with fractures to her skull and ribs and numerous other injuries.

Because Weir is a juvenile, the case was originally filed in juvenile court, but was recently waived to adult court. Decker said the criteria for being waived to adult court include that the crime is a class-A or class-B felony if committed by an adult, that probable cause exists that the suspect committed the crime, and that the suspect is at least age 16.

Judge David Bolk set a trial date of Feb. 26 in the case, along with a pretrial conference on Feb. 4.
