Probable cause found in TH stabbing case

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute man arrested for aggravated battery in connection with a stabbing Saturday evening will return to court on Wednesday for filing of formal charges.

Charles “Butch” Corn, 45, appeared via video in Vigo Superior Court 1 where Judge John Roach found probable cause for his arrest on a charge of aggravated battery. Corn is being held in the Vigo County Jail with bail set at $75,000 cash only.

Terre Haute Police Detective Brad Rumsey testified during Monday’s initial probable cause hearing that police were called to the 600 block of Lafayette Avenue around 8:35 p.m. after witnesses reported that a man had been stabbed.

Rumsey said several witnesses talked to police and stated that the victim had been inside a vehicle with other men when Corn, who was standing outside the driver’s window of the vehicle, resumed an argument with the victim from earlier in the day. The victim got out of the vehicle and walked to the front where witnesses report that Corn stabbed him in the abdomen.

Witnesses reported that Corn got into the vehicle and had the driver take him to Taylorville. The driver later told police that he felt he had to give Corn a ride because Corn possessed the large knife.

Police went to Taylorville and located Corn, who had a long knife protruding from a front pocket of his pants. Rumsey stated in court that when Corn was brought to the THPD headquarters for questioning, a blood stain was visible on the thigh area of Corn’s pants.

The victim was taken to Union Hospital for treatment where he was stabilized before being transferred to Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis for treatment of injuries to his intestines and bowel.

Corn will return to court at 9 a.m. Wednesday for the filing of formal charges.
