Indiana delegates busy at convention

TERRE HAUTE — Hoosier Democrats hope to bring energy and answers back from their weeklong convention in North Carolina.

Bionca Gambill, a delegate representing Indiana’s 8th Congressional District among the state’s 105 gathered at the Democratic National Convention, said Thursday afternoon it’s been a busy week in Charlotte.

Riding on a bus en route to Time Warner Arena as she spoke over the phone, Gambill said Hoosier delegates had been getting up at 6 a.m. each morning in preparation for breakfast meetings at 7:30. Caucus meetings and speeches filled the days through late evening, and three hours of sleep at a shot wasn’t unusual, she reported.

Security had tightened noticeably, she said, given that President Barack Obama was set to speak later that evening.

And out of a week’s worth of speakers, Gambill said a favorite was tough to pick. A number of speakers, some of whom are relatively unknown to the public, addressed caucus meetings with terrific messages, she said. But from the floor, her favorite of the week was that of First Lady Michelle Obama. Her address Tuesday evening came on the heels of much work both Monday and Tuesday.

“It was a nice, gradual build-up to Michelle’s speech, and I thought she hit it out of the park,” Gambill said, noting the importance of seeing Obama as a man and father as well as president. “And that was great because it was my birthday, and it was the best birthday ever.”

Other speeches of note included that of U.S. Rep. Emanuel Cleaver, II from Missouri, and candidate for the Massachusetts U.S. Senate seat Elizabeth Warren, she said.

“And of course President Clinton at the end was just fabulous,” she said. “He’s a brilliant man and a great president.”

Clinton’s speech, she said, provided a “civics lesson” which helped explain how an economic hole dug over eight years can’t be completely filled in three or four. Where the Democrat Party is, where the administration is, and what the alternative view is, were all explained in grand form, she said.

The convention wraps up this week, and Gambill said she hopes to bring back tools with which she can convey the party’s message this election. The next two months will be full of campaigning, and Gambill said their team is ready to go.
