Pence joined by other Republican candidates in Brazil

BRAZIL —

Indiana’s “moment” is only 10 days away, and Republican candidates pledge to make the state an example of success all America can follow.

Republican gubernatorial candidate Mike Pence joined others on the party’s ticket inside Clay County’s GOP Headquarters Saturday morning. The office in Forest Park Plaza was spilling over with people as Pence and his family offered their support for continued Republican leadership in the state.

Pence’s team was joined by Indiana’s Eighth District U.S. Congressman Larry Bucshon (R-Evansville), State Rep. Bob Heaton (R-Terre Haute) of the 46th District and candidate Al Morrison who seeks the 42nd District seat.

Sue Ellspermann, the Republican candidate for lieutenant governor, said Saturday morning’s meeting was meant to rally supporters.

“So whoop it up,” she said to applause. “We are in for a great, great time in Indiana.”

Under the leadership of “the best governor in the country,” Republican Mitch Daniels, Indiana has successfully turned the deficit he inherited eight years ago into a multi-billion dollar surplus, she said. And with a solid “AAA” credit rating and recently passed right-to-work legislation, that makes Indiana is the envy of the nation, she added.

“That legislation was so important,” she said, adding that since January, 83 corporations have said they’re looking to expand here now, largely because of laws limiting union activity.

Bucshon said the Republican ticket, from national to local offices, presents an opportunity that makes him optimistic for America.

“It truly has been an honor to represent you the past two years,” he said, adding that in addition to his own re-election, he wants to see Indiana State Treasurer Richard Mourdock elected to the U.S. Senate, and former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney in the White House.

And on those issues, Pence too was clear.

“Men and women, we need Richard Mourdock in the United States Senate,” he said to applause, emphasizing the importance of making “Barack Obama a one-term president” by electing Romney.

“I am running for governor of Indiana because I love this state and I have a plan to take this state from good to great,” he said, noting this year represents “Indiana’s moment.”

Given its fiscal strength, the state can become the dominant player in the Midwest and an example of conservatism for the rest of the nation to follow, he said.

“And when we repeal Obamacare, there will be a doctor in the house to help draft a health care bill that puts patients and doctors first,” he said, referencing Bucshon, a heart surgeon.

Jasen Gibbens, a teacher and U.S. Army veteran, said he likes the fact that Pence’s platform and agenda are clear and to the point. Too often, political messages are offered in vague terms, whereas Pence makes no pretense of his intentions.

“I enjoyed the speech,” he said.
