Tulips planted as part of Breast Cancer Awareness

TERRE HAUTE — Pink tulips will be popping up in the shape of a breast cancer ribbon next spring in the grassy lawn of The Meadows shopping center on Terre Haute’s east side.

The Wabash Valley affiliate office of Susan G. Komen for the Cure is planting bulbs — with the assistance of The Tulip Co. and More — in honor of October as Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

“In the spring, we can use it as a place to get photos taken, like at our open house,” said Gwen Hicks of the affiliate store and office, located at The Meadows.

Pink tulip bulbs can be purchased by the bag at the affiliate store during October. For a variety of colors, as well as daffodils and hyacinths, The Tulip Co. and More owner Lisa Welsh said she has a larger selection available at her store at 1850 E. Davis Drive.

Proceeds of the sales during the month of October will  go to the Wabash Valley Affiliate, which promotes breast cancer awareness, offers education and support and hosts events such as the annual Race for the Cure in Terre Haute.

On Wednesday, affiliate board president Sally Roetker was joined by vice president Jill Ferres, Welsh and Hicks during a groundbreaking for the ribbon of tulips.

Anyone wanting to purchase the bulbs can visit the affiliate store in The Meadows, go to The Tulip Co. and More or go online to www.TheTulipCompany.com.
