Officials confirm outbreak of chicken pox in Terre Haute

TERRE HAUTE — Vigo County officials stated Wednesday afternoon that an outbreak of chicken pox has been confirmed in Terre Haute.

According to a media release issued by the Vigo County Health Department, five cases of chicken pox were confirmed at Farrington Grove Elementary School, thus meeting the state’s definition of an “outbreak.” State and local health officials will work to immunize at least 52 students there and staff will be assessed for risk.

According to the release, an outbreak is warranted if five or more cases are discovered in children under 13, or three or more cases in children older than 13. If a child has not had a chicken pox vaccination and the parent or guardian refuses to allow this to be administered, the child will be excluded from school, per the release. Children who have had one shot already but refuse the second will also be excluded from school.

Children allowed to get a second shot, or those who have had both already, will not be excluded, nor will those who have had a documented case of chicken pox.

Surveillance will continue for two complete incubation cycles which total 42 days. More information will be provided as it becomes available.
