TERRE HAUTE —
With just three weeks until the general election, Republican 8th District Congressman Larry Bucshon staged an outdoor rally Monday in Terre Haute urging people to vote early, if they can’t vote on Election Day.
He was accompanied by lieutenant governor candidate Sue Ellspermann.
About 20 people — including Vigo Republican candidates and supporters — attended the rally, conducted on a blustery fall day at Wolf Field on the Indiana State University campus.
Afterward, the group marched to the Vigo County Courthouse, where those who reside in the county had an opportunity to vote.
Vigo County voters can cast an absentee ballot at the courthouse through noon Nov. 5. The courthouse is open for voting from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturdays before the election (Saturday, Oct. 27 and Nov. 3).
Voters must have a state or federally issued photo ID to vote.
“We want to make people aware they can get out and early vote if they’re not going to be able to vote on Election Day. … Obviously, hopefully, that candidate in my race will be me,” Bucshon told those attending the rally.
He is running against Dave Crooks, a Democrat and former state representative, and Libertarian candidate Bart Gadau.
Every vote does count, Bucshon said, describing a Posey County statehouse race decided by eight votes in the last election.
One vote “may mean the difference” in the outcome of a race, he said.
The rally’s location was chosen because of its proximity to the courthouse, said Nick McGee, Bucshon campaign spokesman.
While many ISU students were in class, some members of ISU College Republicans made it a point to attend the event, including freshman Jessica Hall.
“I support the Republican Party. All their values are very important to me,” said Hall, who is from Beech Grove. “Clearly the people [Democrats] in office now are not bettering our country.” She believes Republicans can turn things around.
Caleb Thomas, a junior from Champaign, Ill., also attended the rally. “I’m a conservative Republican. I think the current administration under the Democratic Party is failing the country and we need some change,” he said. “I think the Republican Party will help with the economy and I certainly support their moral values.”
He is Catholic and has concerns that Obamacare is encroaching on the First Amendment rights of the Catholic Church.
