Orange Friday slated for Nov. 16

Effort aims to raise hunger awareness

TERRE HAUTE — A growing project to fight hunger in the Wabash Valley features orange ribbons and the combined efforts of the Visiting Nurse Association and Hospice of the Wabash Valley, along with Catholic Charities.

Orange Friday is on Nov. 16 this year, falling on the Friday before Thanksgiving, a week before Black Friday. It is a day dedicated to hunger awareness in the community, with the the motto “Before you shop on Black Friday, feed the hungry on Orange Friday.”

Orange is the official color of hunger awareness.

For $3, anyone can purchase an orange ribbon to wear on Orange Friday to show support for combatting hunger. Robin Heng of VNA/Hospice said individuals and businesses are encouraged to challenge others in the fundraiser by donating $3 per ribbon.

Jennifer Buell of Catholic Charities said that every $3 donated feeds a family of four for one day. The funds will be used to supplement food bank supplies distributed by Catholic Charities to its 90 participating agencies.

“It will be used to purchase protein, dairy and egg products, which is some of the hardest and most expensive items for our member food banks to acquire,” Buell said.

“We continue to see such a need in our community, so we encourage everyone to pitch in,” Heng said.

The ribbons will be sold at Baesler’s Market on Poplar Street from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Nov. 16.

Ribbons can also be purchased at the VNA/Hospice office at 400 Eighth Ave. in Terre Haute, and at Catholic Charities at 14th and Locust Streets. The Grand Traverse Pie Co. at Third and Cherry streets is also selling ribbons during its lunch hour.

The goal for this year’s effort is $10,000, Heng said. Orange Friday is in its fourth year, and in each of its previous three years more than $3,000 has been raised to feed the hungry.

One in six people in the Wabash Valley is considered food insecure. Among the 90 agenices that will be supported through Catholic Charities are Providence Pantry, Four Square Gospel Church, Lighthouse Mission, Mother Hubbard’s Cupboard at 14th & Chestnut, Salvation Army, Grace Temple and Club Soda.

Anyone wanting to support the project by ordering ribbons to sell can call Heng at 812-232-7611 or email her at rheng@uhhg.org.
