6 more West Nile sites found

TERRE HAUTE — Health officials confirmed six more pools of West Nile Virus in Vigo County on Friday as they offered safety tips and methods of prevention.

Sydney Elliott, health educator for the Vigo County Health Department, said people should be vigilant around their properties. The six new positive pools of West Nile Virus are not limited to one geographic area.

About 80 percent of people contracting the virus will never display symptoms as it simply runs its course, she said. But people with weak immune systems are at the highest risk.

“So the people who really need to look out for it are the pregnant women, older people, the very young, or anyone with a weakened immune system,” she said.

Symptoms can include fever and body aches.

Mosquitos typically become inactive around October, she said, remarking this year’s weather patterns leave a lot of questions unanswered in that regard.

In the meantime, residents are encouraged to wear long-sleeved shirts and apply insect repellent containing DEET when outdoors. Rain gutters and other containers with standing water should also be inspected and cleaned regularly, she said, noting this can help stave off mosquitoes.
