Slain officer Long made many major drug-related arrests

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute police have confirmed that Brent Long, a six-year veteran of the Terre Haute Police Department, was shot and killed while serving a felony warrant at an apartment house Monday afternoon.

Long was also a member of the SWAT team and a K-9 officer.

Long and K-9 dog Shadow were involved in two major drug busts in 2010 and 2011.

In February 2010, Long and Shadow discovered 217 pounds of marijuana inside a trailer being hauled by a black van on Interstate 70.

Long noticed the van and trailer swerving from lane-to-lane on the interstate, according to a Tribune-Star report. After pulling over the van to question the driver, Long noticed several telltale signs of drug trafficking in the cab of the van. He then had Shadow sniff around the trailer. Shadow’s behavior indicated drugs might be inside the trailer, according to a police report.

Other police and another K-9 unit arrived at the scene. Eventually, police discovered nine large wrapped bundles of marijuana inside some large speakers inside the trailer. The driver of the trailer had earlier told police he was hauling equipment for musicians.

In February of this year, Long and Shadow were involved in a drug bust that yielded about 125 pounds of marijuana, $1,187 in cash and the arrest of the truck’s driver.

The bust occurred at a weigh station on I-70, after an Indiana State Police Commercial Motor Vehicle Inspector signaled the tractor trailer to enter the scale facility for a routine inspection.

ISP requested law enforcement canine assistance, and Long and partner Shadow arrived moments later and began a walk-around the tractor trailer. The dog “alerted,” and police entered the trailer.

Inside the rear one-third of the trailer and between pallets of nutritional drinks were 12 bundles of marijuana wrapped in plastic. A “masking agent” was used inside the bundles in an attempt to disguise the scent of the marijuana from police canines, “but it obviously failed,” according to a state police report.

Long and Shadow, a Belgian Malinois, also participated in the  American Working Dog K-9 Olympics in Peru, Indiana. In 2009, they placed second in luggage detection.

Long began working with Shadow in 2008.

Long’s Facebook site indicates he liked country music and Larry the Cable Guy. He enjoyed the television shows River Monsters, COPS, First 48 and CSI.

His activities and interests included hunting, running, fishing and camping, according to Facebook.
