VIDEO: 4-H'ers go wild with projects

Youths combine learning with fun

TERRE HAUTE — Children carrying brightly colored and informative posters and projects scurried around the Vigo County Fairgrounds on Saturday as months of hard work received blue, red or white ribbons from judges.

Those projects are now on display as the Vigo County Fair opens today, running through next Saturday, with a full schedule of shows, demonstrations and grandstand events.

Lucas Bryan, a third-year 4-H’er said he completed six projects, including a Civil War bench in the woodworking project.

“I just thought it was cool,” Bryan said of making the bench project. He measured and cut the wooden pieces, stained and sanded the project, then woodburned his initials into it. The daylong project earned a blue ribbon, along with honors.

His sister, Hannah, entered a painting, health poster, and latchhook and weaving projects. Younger brother Samuel entered projects on rockets, dolphins and whales in the Mini 4-H category for future 4-H’ers.

“We learned a lot from doing the workbooks,” Hannah said of the projects.

Even their mother, Michelle Bryan, entered projects in the open-class categories, making the fair a family event.

The theme for this year’s fair is 4-H “Gone Wild,” which fit well with a cake-decorating project planned by Bethany Mahurin.

“I wanted to try to do faces, and I wanted to do a zoo,” she said, referring to the colorful tigers and animals decorating her cake. “Then my mom reminded me it was 4-H ‘Gone Wild,’ and it worked out.”

The cake, a styrofoam form covered with icing, fondant, piping and gum paste flowers, took about four days to complete, she said.

A new project this year for 4-H’ers was the public awareness focus for 2011 -- Methamphetamines in Vigo County.

Vigo County Sheriff’s Deputy Karen Cross, a former member of the Drug Task Force, judged the projects in that category as they came in.

Cross said she made a presentation on the county’s methamphetamine problem for the extension office a few weeks ago, and did a workshop for the youth. The project entries are intended to educate youth and adults about the legality of drugs, how to stay safe from drugs, and the effects of illegal drug manufacturing on families and the environment. The advanced projects could include 30-second radio commercials that can be broadcast locally.

While there weren’t as many 4-H’ers participating in that project as she had hoped, Cross said she thinks the public is becoming more aware of the problem of meth abuse in the community.

Krista Farthing, extension educator for 4-H, said that between 2,500 to 3,000 projects, including livestock, will be entered by 4-H’ers for this year’s fair.

The public can view the 4-H exhibits in the exhibit hall from noon to 10 p.m. daily during the fair.
