House of Hope back in business

Clay County center helping those in need

BRAZIL, IND. — Less than a year after being closed by state officials, a Clay County mission center has re-opened to serve people with histories of drugs, alcohol and emotional problems.

The House of Hope, on U.S. 40 west of Brazil, has been receiving new residents since December.

Assistant Director Brian Rosano credits community support and donations with keeping the center afloat, despite facility upgrades costing $125,000. The facility had to install a commercial sprinkler system for fire suppression, a commercial alarm system, and renovate for correct access to and from living quarters. It took 10 months, some creative thinking and a lot of fundraisers.

“$125,000 may not seem like a lot to some organizations,” Rosano said, “We thought it was going to put us under. But we put it in God’s hands, and here we are, open a year later.”

While the group normally has fundraisers throughout the year — the next one is a pancake breakfast on March 10 — the staff took on monthly fundraisers such as music events, dinners, breakfasts and community yard sales.

“Those were the easiest and best fundraisers,” Rosano said. “If people couldn’t donate financially, they could donate clothes or furniture to the yard sale.”

House of Hope is a non-profit Christian program that houses residents for eight months as they seek treatment for substance abuse. House of Hope is one of dozens of facilities operated around the country as part of Mission Teens Inc.

The facility now can house 50 residents, where it could previously house 55 to 60 residents, both men and women. It employs 12 full-time staff members, 10 of whom reside at House of Hope.

While the facility was closed for renovations, the residents were transferred to other Mission Teens properties, so their treatment continued.

Rosano said he expects to receive more residents soon. Anyone struggling with drug or alcohol issues can call (812) 446-1717. The program is nondenominational and features intensive Bible study.

“This place is free,” Rosano said. “The only thing is, they must be open to God. We ask them to have an open mind and an open heart.”
