Early voting opens today

TERRE HAUTE — Registered voters in Vigo County can begin early voting today.

Voters can cast a ballot on the first floor of the Vigo County Courthouse, at Third and Ohio Streets in Terre Haute, today through noon Nov. 5 for races in the Nov. 6 general election.

Under the Election Reform Act in Indiana, voters can cast an absentee vote 29 days before the general election.

The Vigo County Courthouse is open for voting from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday and on four Saturdays before the election: Saturday, Oct. 20, Oct. 27 and Nov. 3; hours are 8  a.m. to 4 p.m.

Voters must have a state or federally issued photo ID to vote.

No-excuse, early voting is allowed in 32 states and the District of Columbia, while a handful of states, such as Kentucky, Minnesota and Massachusetts, require a valid excuse to vote early, such as that a voter will be out of the county or country on election day, is in military service or having surgery.
