Feather Creek contract awarded

TERRE HAUTE — An Ohio contractor has won the contract to dredge and widen Clinton’s Feather Creek.

Q.B.S. Inc. of Alliance, Ohio bid $1,068,928 to realign approximately 3,300 feet of the waterway, which runs through the town of Clinton and has a history of frequent flooding.

Because federal money is being used for the contract, the bid process was subject to Army Corps of Engineers rules and limited to contractors already approved for such projects. Local firms would be eligible for subcontracted work, noted Kristy Jerrell of the West Central Indiana Economic Development District, which has been pushing the project.

Initial phases of the project, which is expected to take up to a year to complete, involve relocating a sewer on Clinton’s Ninth Street.

Dredging work is expected to begin in the next couple of months once all state permits have been received, according to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, which provided most of the funding for the approximately $1.2 million project. The state of Indiana provided $363,000 for the project while the City of Clinton provided $15,000.

In January, dozens of Clinton residents turned out for a public meeting to urge the Army Corps of Engineers to fund the project, which has been on the city’s wish list since about the 1930s. The meeting was also attended by representatives of Indiana’s congressional delegation, the West Central Indiana Economic Development District and Clinton’s elected leaders.
