Drug Task Force called in to assist on suspicious fire

TERRE HAUTE — Investigators for Honey Creek Fire Department say a fire that destroyed home Friday morning along south Indiana 63 was suspicious in origin.

“It does not look to be accidental in nature,” said Josh Sittler, battalion chief of the Honey Creek Fire Department. “There was other activity going on that we need to further investigate,” he said.

When asked if the home had a meth lab, Sittler said “that is the avenue we are looking at and if that was related to the fire. We are still investigating.”

The fire department is working with the Vigo County Drug Task Force, he said.

Sittler said a man renting the home was able to get out of the 11⁄2 story house. “There were no smoke detectors in the house at the time of the fire,” Sittler said.

The home is located at 3988 S. Indiana 63, across from the Terre Haute Federal Penitentiary. The home was a total loss, Sittler, estimating value at more than $40,000.

Firefighters arrived at 6:30 a.m. Friday until about 11:30 a.m., while investigators remained at the scene longer. Honey Creek was assisted by Prairieton Fire Department, Terre Haute Fire Department, Sugar Creek Township and Riley Township fire departments, as well as the Vigo County Sheriff’s Department.
