Terre Haute attorney charged with felony theft for 2009 incident

TERRE HAUTE — A Terre Haute attorney has been charged with felony theft after he allegedly cashed a client’s money orders that were intended for bankruptcy court.

Mark E. Watson, 50, appeared Thursday in Vigo Superior Court 3 where Judge David Bolk read an allegation of class-D felony theft, which was filed March 14.

Information filed with the court states that in April and May 2009, while he was employed with the Rowdy Williams Law Firm, Watson is suspected of taking three $500 money orders from a client, never forwarding them to the bankruptcy court as intended.

A police investigator stated that the attorney’s employer confronted Watson about cashing the money orders, and that Watson repaid the $1,500.

A report of Watson’s alleged actions was made by the client to the Indiana Supreme Court, and disciplinary action is pending against Watson.

However, because Watson allegedly failed to cooperate with the disciplinary process, a warrant was issued for his arrest and he was picked up by the U.S. Marshal Service on Wednesday and booked into the Vigo County Jail. He was released on $5,000 cash bond.

Watson is scheduled for an April 1 court hearing.
